PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Rhode Island lawmakers are considering an extension of a 2013 law that was passed in an effort to help protect homeowners facing foreclosure.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin is championing the legislation.

"Mortgage foreclosures haven't gone away," Kilmartin said during a news conference Monday afternoon. "We're here to talk about the people too small to fail, the people who are underwater on their mortgages, people who have trouble making their payments."

In the wake of the Great Recession, the R.I. General Assembly passed foreclosure mediation legislation, which allows homeowners who are behind on their mortgage payments to meet with their lender and a mediator.

The mediation is conducted through RIHousing.
