ProJo: Providence community pushes for affordable homes over housing complex

PROVIDENCE — A group of South Side residents made clear at a community meeting Monday night what they wanted to see built in their neighborhood to replace the abandoned affordable housing development known as Barbara Jordan II: houses.

“We want homes for our families,” said Ashley Taylor, 25, a South Side native who said she has watched her friends struggle for years with little economic opportunity and few options for affordable housing.

“We can't get jobs to pay for our rent, and we get evicted,” said Taylor, who spoke during a meeting designed to solicit community input about the redevelopment of Barbara Jordan II. “There's no one there to help us.
