ProJo: Elderly couple must leave Federal Hill apartment, can't find affordable place
Since an eviction action started in January by their new landlord, the couple, who are in their 70s, haven't been able to find another apartment they can afford. They are selling their furniture to raise money for a new place. At an eviction hearing on Feb. 5, they had agreed to move out by Feb. 28, but last week, the landlord agreed to let them pay to stay until the end of March.
Together, they said, their Social Security benefits barely cover rent and utilities, and they receive food stamps. Before they reached retirement age, Madonna cleaned houses, and Butch used to work as a laborer.
