NLIHC: President Biden to Extend Eviction Moratorium; Improvements, Enforcement, Rental Assistance Needed

President Biden will sign an executive order today instructing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to immediately extend the federal eviction moratorium through March. He will then work with Congress to further extend this critical protection through September. After the incoming CDC director extends the current moratorium, she will begin a process seeking input from stakeholders on needed improvements to the order.

The eviction moratorium, which was slated to expire on January 31, has kept millions of people stably housed during the pandemic. Without President Biden's action to extend the moratorium, tens of millions of renters were at risk of losing their homes this winter with enormous, negative consequences for individuals and families, communities, and our nation's public health and economy.
