NBC 10 I-Team: Providence sees surge of illegal apartments amid housing crisis

(WJAR) — The housing crisis has come to a tipping point in Providence with dozens of illegal apartments popping up across the city.

Records obtained by the NBC 10 I-Team show over the past two years, Providence inspectors have cited roughly 100 homes for illegal apartment units, or places people are sleeping in without the proper exits in case of an emergency.

Providence Department of Inspections and Standards Deputy Director Kevin Mahoney has seen it firsthand.
