Nearly 300 real estate and community development professionals from across the globe gathered in Seattle for the event, which explored a range of housing issues.

Sixth Annual Women Helping Women event

On Wednesday, April 3rd from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., join Crossroads Rhode Island as they host their Sixth Annual Women Helping Women event at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence.

Women Helping Women is a fundraising event hosted by women for women, the proceeds of which support the shelter and programs for women at Crossroads.

Remembering John Joyce

John Joyce, the co-founder of the Rhode Island Homeless Advocacy Project (RIHAP), passed away last week. John was a tireless grassroots organizer who worked to engage homeless and formerly homeless individuals in efforts to end homelessness.

During his career, John authored and advocated for the passage of the Rhode Island Homeless Bill of Rights, the first of its kind in the nation. He also collaborated with RIHAP to introduce and pass the Homeless Hate Crimes Bill.

New York Times Editorial spotlights: The Affordable Housing Crisis

A recent editorial in the New York Times calls for better investment in programs that will help lower income families afford housing, particularly those who are renting. The editorial cites the increase in the number of families across the country who are paying more than half their income on housing, along with the $2.5 billion reduction in federal financing of affordable housing programs from 2010 to 2012.

"With nearly nine million households teetering on the verge of homelessness, the country clearly needs more support for affordable housing, not less," the editorial notes.

Olneyville Housing Corporation awarded grant for supportive housing

Olneyville Housing Corporation (OHC) has been awarded a $100,000 Housing for Everyone grant from TD Charitable Foundation. This grant will support OHC's development of supportive housing for homeless families. OHC is one of 25 nationwide grant awardees, and the first Rhode Island recipient of TD Bank's premier annual philanthropic effort.

OHC is working with the Corporation for Supportive Housing, Rhode Island Housing and KeepSpace to advance the development of supportive housing in Olneyville.

House of Hope event to benefit homeless women

On Wednesday, December 5th from 5:30 - 9 p.m. at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet, House of Hope Community Development Corporation will host their 4th annual Girls Night Out event to benefit homeless women in Rhode Island.

Fashion With Friends will include an evening of food, shopping, raffles, and a fashion show featuring local leaders in the housing community.

Support for Affordable Housing

At the 2012 Housing Fact Book release, HousingWorks RI executive director Nellie Gorbea publicly acknowledged Governor Lincoln Chafee for including a $25 million housing bond in his budget, the first Rhode Island governor to do so. Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed and House Speaker Gordon Fox were also recognized for their leadership and longstanding support of affordable housing in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island voters approved Question 7 on November 6th, another important victory and testament to the public support for affordable housing.
