Olney Village Ribbon Cutting

On Friday, May 17th at 2 p.m., Olneyville Housing Corporation is hosting a ribbon cutting celebrating the completion of Olney Village.

Elected officials, community partners and neighborhood residents will join to celebrate the transformation of 12 foreclosed properties and several vacant lots into 40 safe, affordable homes for families.

Centered around the William D'Abate Elementary School, Olney Village also includes three community spaces for local nonprofits and a permanent home for the Olneyville Food Center.

On Saturday, May 11th from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Housing Network of Rhode Island and Rhode Island Housing are hosting a free Housing Fair for homeowners, first-time homebuyers, and renters.

Foreclosed Dreams: Photo Exhibit

From Thursday, April 18th through Sunday, May 12th, the Yellow Peril Gallery will present Foreclosed Dreams, a photo essay by David H. Wells exploring the empty homes and foreclosed dreams left in the wake of the foreclosure crisis. This exhibition will be guest curated by Viera Levitt.

Wells started the project with the goal of understanding the economic upheaval people are living through. He initially photographed in the Central Valley of California, but also focused on Rhode Island, where he lives. The opening reception for this exhibit is on Thursday, April 18, from 5-9 p.m., during Gallery Night Providence.

U.S. General Accounting Office releases report on Foreclosure Review Process

The "robosigning" controversy that came to light in 2010 caused foreclosure practices across the nation to come under close scrutiny, and millions of foreclosures to be halted. Ultimately, 14 mortgage servicers entered into consent orders, which required reviews by third-party consultants of their loan files for errors in servicing and foreclosure practices.

The Urban Land Institute Terwilliger Center for Housing recently hosted Housing Opportunity 2013, their 5th annual housing conference.

Nearly 300 real estate and community development professionals from across the globe gathered in Seattle for the event, which explored a range of housing issues.

Unemployment and Housing

An article in this week's Providence Business News highlighted "Unemployment from a Child's Perspective," a report recently released by the Urban Institute and children's advocacy group First Focus. The report showed that 22 percent of Rhode Island's children lived with an unemployed or underemployed parent in 2012.

Persistent unemployment and high housing cost burdens leave many homeowners vulnerable to foreclosure.

Foreclosure Quarterly Report: Q4-2012

HousingWorks RI today released its analysis of foreclosures in Rhode Island for Q4 2012. The report looks at the number of foreclosures in each of Rhode Island’s 39 cities and towns and offers regional comparisons.

Quick Glance Findings:

• Q4 2012 saw an 11.2 percent drop in the number of residential foreclosure deeds filed in Rhode Island compared to Q4 2011, and a 36 percent decline from Q4 2009, when data was first readily available.
