In program run by the R.I. Public Health Institute, people receiving SNAP assistance earn credit for another dollar toward their next purchase — essentially doubling their benefits.

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. — Inside the recreation room of a public housing complex, Olinda Vidinha hungrily eyed cartons brimming with fresh produce. Ripe cherry tomatoes. Brussel sprouts. Ginger root. Kiwis.

“I need vegetables,” she said, reaching for a box of organic mixed greens. “My fridge is empty.”

Providence Journal: New affordable-housing project breaks ground in Central Falls

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. — Mayor James A. Diossa joined housing advocates Thursday morning for a groundbreaking ceremony at 63 Fletcher St., where a new, affordable, two-family home will be built, replacing a blighted six-unit multifamily property that has been demolished.

The project is a collaboration between Pawtucket Central Falls Development and the Central Falls Nuisance Task Force.

The task force had identified 63 Fletcher St. as one of the worst nuisance properties in the city, and the property was ordered to be vacated after the municipal housing court deemed it uninhabitable.

Providence Journal: $11.2M housing project in Pawtucket a cause to celebrate

PAWTUCKET, R.I. — By the end of July, it will be an active construction site. But on Saturday afternoon, the corner of East and Branch streets was the scene of a neighborhood block party organized by Pawtucket Central Falls Development.

Balloons, face painting and games for children were all part of the fun, along with music and food. About 100 people attended the event.
